Investment banking advisory and Private Equity Identifying acquisition targets in the European financial services sector
The Smart Cube’s client — a UK-based private equity firm with more than £1 billion in assets — retained TSC to identify potential acquisition targets in the financial services sector. Context and Scope: The Smart Cube assisted the client in identifying potential acquisition targets in the financial services sector by evaluating non-core assets of 16 European financial institutions for investment by the client. The output included brief profiles of the companies identified as attractive investment opportunities on the basis of client’s basic investment strategy and criteria TSC Approach: Financial institutions to be researched were decided by the PE firm, primarily on the basis of their financial position during the global economic crisis. To ensure the comprehensiveness of the list of assets screened, a detailed asset database of active subsidiaries was created from multiple sources. 180 non-core subsidiaries were identified as potential investment targets that matched the investment strategy of the client, in terms of enterprise value, nature of business, location of the business, etc. Deliverable: A bespoke list of non-core subsidiaries of 16 financial institutions was created. These subsidiaries were either classified as non-core by the financial institution itself or whose primary business was a non-core activity for the financial institution. The Smart Cube profiled 47 companies of the 180 non-core subsidiaries identified as investment opportunities |
