The five factors that make us a great place to work

It’s evident that there’s a lot to love about working at The Smart Cube. Close to 25% of our employees have been with us for more than 5 years! So what’s the secret? In this blog, our Chief HR Officer, Sushma Rana takes us through the five factors that make us a great place to work.

1. Culture

Our strong, values-driven, employee-centric work culture is at the heart of what we do and all of our systems and processes are designed around it. We place great emphasis on our employee engagement and enhancing the overall employee experience.

Our people are considered valued partners and key stakeholders, so including them as decision makers is paramount. By using multiple methods to continuously listen to people’s feedback and gauge their sentiment, we fine-tune our policies and processes, and adapt as the world around us evolves.

We understand that work and play go hand in hand, so we have an active company social life too! From celebrating significant festivals, to our annual sports and family days. Our in-house Fun Club is managed by a group of enthusiastic SmartCubers who lead activities on a monthly basis. We see high levels of participation in these activities, helping us build stronger employee bonds.

Our culture is an all-encompassing factor for most SmartCubers, and that’s why we’re so proud of it.

2. The commitment to our employees

We strive to provide our employees with the best possible employee experience, right from the get-go – starting with our seamless onboarding process (including for those working remotely). Through continuous listening our senior leaders are able to gain valuable insights indicating factors such as engagement, mood and employee net promoter score, on a real-time basis.

By employing our AI+HI approach, we use AI-enabled employee chat assistance to reach out to our people during different stages of their employee life cycle. This allows us to learn about the most important employee engagement drivers such as: work experience, team dynamics, career and development, organisational, culture and senior leadership.

Some of the parameters rated highly by our people include: diversity, equity and inclusion, clarity on the organisation’s vision, culture of respect, openness, fairness, collaboration, warm and friendly colleagues, approachable senior leadership, nurturing work environment and a sense of purpose at work.

We believe that SmartCubers should be themselves at work and we promote autonomy and ownership of their work, coupled with meritocratic performance culture.

3. Training and development

We are committed to providing our employees with the best possible career opportunities and we know that our people thrive the most through meaningful work. That’s why SmartCubers have a sharp learning curve which shapes them into excellent professionals with astute business acumen. We also have well-defined career progression mapping for all business lines, and the flexibility to create new roles allows us to address evolving client and team needs.

For anyone who joins us straight from university or with limited industry experience, we provide a 4-6 week training program that’s tailored to the individual’s need; to equip them with operational skills and help them with their campus-to-corporate transition.

All new joiners are provided with relevant online training and to ensure holistic development, our focus is not only on the technical and professional training, but on the soft and leadership skills as well.

We also offer unique outbound training experiences for employees at all levels. It’s where they learn our company values through a series of experiential initiatives in the great outdoors. This sets us apart from anyone else in our industry – and we consistently receive positive feedback for this ‘out of the box’ approach!

SmartCubers are supported throughout their careers with ongoing monthly technical and behavioural training, as well as managerial development programs to take employees to the next level.

4. Benefits

We’re committed to keeping our employees healthy and happy. That’s why, apart from providing medical insurance to cover employees and their families, we’re associated with a strong Health and Wellness partner – to provide its services to all our employees. Not only does this allow 24×7 telephone consultation by experienced doctors across specialities; but also mental health and emotional wellness counselling services.

There are also a number of other perks of the job such as a subsidised cab facility for door-to-door commutes, an in-house nutritionist facility, interest-free loans and salary advances during emergencies.

Giving people the opportunity to  contribute to causes they believe in also plays a role in good wellbeing. ‘TSC Together’ is our employee-led CSR programme for this purpose. Every team member can take two paid days’ leave each year to directly support the causes and projects that matter to them.

5. Flexibility

The pandemic has accelerated the transformation in the way that people work and their relationship with work. That’s why as the disruption from the pandemic subsided, we surveyed our people to find out what kind of work pattern they wanted. As a result, we now have a hybrid work model where our employees work on average 2 days from the office and the remaining days from home.

We have created an employee-centric model, where our business leaders are empowered to design work structures around employees. We not only provide SmartCubers with the right resources and guidance, but also the space and trust; enabling them to do their very best at work. We believe in providing employees with a fulfilling work environment where they can find meaning, be enabled with learning and growth opportunities, be well supported with the right performance management process, and get the apt reward and recognition measures.

We also have a flexible work culture which supports SmartCubers, every step of the way. Whether it’s pursuing a higher education certification, or taking care of family; our work environment ensures that our people are able to take out time for important milestones in their lives.
